Bunny


About a year ago I got a bunny as my classroom pet. I have wanted a Netherland Dwarf bunny for quite some time because of their cute ears and they stay small. Small bunny = perfect for classoom life. So after the beloved Max (my old guinea pig) left us, I knew now was the time to get a bunny! Thank goodness my sister Anna looks on Craigs List all the time for animals because she actually found a Netherland Dwarf Bunny that was up for adoption! YAY! I got her a couple of days after I found the post and was so excited. The kids decided to name her Maddi after a character in the book Fever 1793 . If you like historical fiction books,  you should check it out because it's really good! Little did I know that bunnies are full of personality! On her first day home she bit me 3 times and got me 2 times with her nails. Good thing is now she likes me (most of the time) and is much more friendly! She lets the kids in the class pet her and feed her. She also hops around the classroom. Now time for the funny part-she warmed up to Jeff much quicker than me. She gives him kisses, runs circles around him, and lays with him on the ground.

I also recently found out that you can train bunnies like dogs! So Jeff and I have been working with Maddi and she can now go up on her hind legs and walk forward. It is the cutest thing!
 

She will also hop into your lap for a treat now! Before she wouldn't even get anywhere close to doing this because she was so scared.
So the next trick I want to teach her is how to 'dance'. How cool would it be if I had a dancing bunny in my classroom?

    Hey Alison! This is Marti! So I know this is random, but I saw you put this on facebook, and I need your advice... we have a bunny too!! We've only had him for almost 2 months now, but we're having trouble potty training him. Were you able to teach your bunny? We heard you can, but so far, the more comfortable he gets with us and our house, the more he starts going everywhere!! I hope things are going well with ya'll, you look great, and very happy! :)

    Hi Marti!

    So...I'm a spoiled bunny owner. I also think I just got a prissy bunny. I actually didn't have to train Maddi in the potty department. She just started to go back in her cage by herself, and she only goes potty in one corner. I did talk to a friend of mine who trained her bunny where to go to the bathroom. She said to pick your bunny up while he's going to the bathroom and put him where you want him to use the potty. So if you have one of those corner litter boxes, just pick him up and place him there. If he tries to leave and go potty on the floor again, just keep picking him up and placing him back in there. You could also give him treats when he does use the bathroom in the correct places. I hope this helps! :)

Katie

The last three weeks have been a bit of a whilrwind for my family. We found out that my sister, Katie, had stage 3 ovarian cancer. She went into the ER because she was having pains in her abdomen, and they found a football sized tumor. My sister is such a strong woman and was walking around the day after her surgery that removed the tumor! Katie decided to have some fun with her hair before her chemo treatments start. It's a good thing that we have a sister that is a hairdresser, she can do so many fun things to hair. Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving started off with a sister, husbands, and dog walk before we stuffed ourselves silly! A Riegel girl tradition started many years ago after watching Winnie the Pooh. Pooh and his friends play a game where they all put a stick in the river and see whose stick comes out on the other side first. We've called it Pooh sticks since we started playing.
