Sun

We started our study of Space with the Sun. We first read Genesis 1:14-19 and talked about how God created the Sun and the Moon. We then watched this very cute video made by Story Bots. If you haven't seen this show on Netflix, I highly recommend it!

I ordered this book off of Amazon and we read the portions about the sun together. Next we read a poem about the sun and they colored a picture of the sun.

For Math, we sorted pictures of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Naomi and Isaiah took turns counting how many of each object we had. Isaiah continued counting, while Naomi started to add. How many Suns and Moons are there? How many Moons and Earths are there? Very cute activity that you can find here

For phonics Naomi and I played this game to practice CVC words. We each drew 5 cards and tried to find a place to put them that made an actual word. We were able to play this game a couple of times! I was very surprised at how much fun Naomi had playing this! When we were finished playing, I mixed up the letters and Naomi picked one letter a word to glue down and put in her notebook.

For handwriting practice, they made name suns. Each sun ray had a different letter. Once the sun was glued down, they got to paint glitter on their suns.

I had a fun science activity, but of course the week I chose to study the sun it was cloudy and rainy all week! The idea was to place different things on a plate, put it in the sun, and see what melts. We are going to do this once all this rain goes away.

I also made sun themed lunch and snacks for the kids. Again, I was surprised at how much the kids really enjoyed their 'sun' food!

Just cheese cut into sun shapes

Sun sandwiches with tomato and pepper rays and pineapple suns with strawberry rays

Rice cakes covered with peanut butter and apple slices for the rays

We also watched a video on Disney+ about a mission to the Sun. It was a documentary about how scientists created a probe to get close pictures and data from the sun. Funny enough, the name of the probe is the Parker Probe. Naomi and Isaiah found this extremely amusing since their youngest cousin's name is Parker. Since this documentary was meant for an older audience, I fast forwarded a lot. But, it did have some great pictures and views of the sun!

We ended our sun study with smash paining a sun. We cut out white circles of paper, globbed paint on the paper, slid it into a bag, and then hit away. I think we might have to do this again!
I think the end product looked very neat too! After the picture was dried, we added it to the notebook. Isaiah practiced the letter S and Naomi wrote a sentence telling what she learned about the Sun.

Grandkids Make Life Grand

While perusing Pinterest one day I came across this really good idea:   I thought to myself that both my mom and Jeff's mom would really like this! So the crafting began. First I painted a wood board the colors that both ladies wanted. My mom wanted yellow and purple and Jeff's mom wanted tan and red. Next I played around until I found the right size for the letters. Then I cut them out of vinyl on my handy-dandy Cricut: I got some contact paper and lifted up the vinyl letters: Then I lined the letters up on the wood and attached: This is just me making sure that all of the edges are pushed down: And viola! The words are finished! To finish I added a ribbon on the back, ribbon flowers, and small clothes pins to hang pictures with. The final touch was adding pictures of the grandkids. After making this Jeff and I decided that we really liked it...so I might be making something similar for ourselves!

Paddling through Brunswick Stew

Last weekend was quite an exciting one for Jeff and me. Ashley and Neil came up Friday and stayed at our house that night. We love having friends come over, especially when we don't get to see them very often! The next morning we headed up to the Hester family farm that's in Virginia. The Hester clan was having a get-together because a family friend was teaching how to make Brunswick Stew. Now, when I think of Brunswick Stew I immediately think of Smithfield's. Probably because that's the only place I've actually eaten some...yes-I'm not a southerner. When we arrived at the house I was a little surprised to see this: Brunswick Stew cooking outside in a 5 gallon pot that was being stirred by Uncle Mac with a boat paddle. Ok-it's not really a boat paddle, but it sure resembles one! This was the true southern way to make Brunswick Stew, I was told by the other man in the picture (Mr. George). Mr. George also told me that he had a 30 gallon pot to make ...

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving started off with a sister, husbands, and dog walk before we stuffed ourselves silly! A Riegel girl tradition started many years ago after watching Winnie the Pooh. Pooh and his friends play a game where they all put a stick in the river and see whose stick comes out on the other side first. We've called it Pooh sticks since we started playing. I won!  Back at the parents house ready to eat: Naomi enjoyed her first Thanksgiving meal: After Naomi's nap we went to have Thanksgiving with Jeff's family: Naomi enjoyed playing will all of the kids And Uncle Nich: Brother time:
